Adding Friends

I think alliances are a cool aspect of the game, but can you not add friends that you know in real life?

My friend plays the game as well and I'd like to add him. Is that not possible? I think it'd be cool if you could play events with your friends, borrow characters from them or send them characters like how you can in alliances, trade characters, etc.

I'm sure this may have been brought up in the past, but I tried to do some research on the topic and nothing came up. What are everyone's thoughts on the matter?
