How do I determine which of my heroes will be defending me against attacks? Is it just automatically dictated by level?

Your defensive team is the last team that you won a match with. Simple as that.

The team-up they use is randomly determined, based somewhat upon the characters available in that event's token.

Is that any PvP mode? Say you play shield training PvP then switch to another PvP mode its the last time u won with regardless right?!
  • It's supposed to be different for each pvp mode.

Also, if you attack someone and they retaliate, they play against the team that you beat them with regardless of what your last used team was.

I was thinking that but wasn't sure

My brilliant plan of expanding my roster to such a degree that I could drop the hammer with my main team and clean up what I could with my substantial collection of underpowered heroes and villains has been thwarted! I'll get you next time Gadget, NEXT TIIIIME!!!

WAIT, THAT GIVES ME A GREAT IDEA FOR A NON-RELATED CHARACTER!

    Go-Go Gadget .....

This game doesn't explain things at all. Why am I only learning this now, 179 days after I just started?

I would think it the last team you won a match with when you entered the other persons queue. Your team might sit in their queue for some time in which you might have changed your team around. For example it always takes a while for my tank team to stop being hit even though I swapped to the climbing team again.
