To softcap or not - will it help or hurt PVP?

Hi everyone. I'm in the same spot as many transitioning players where I am to the point where I have a number of 3* characters at 10-11 covers and am trying to decide when to dump my ISO into one or two. I am not hurting for ISO in any way, but I'm wondering if it would mess up my MMR. On the one hand, if I had a character softcapped at 140, then I could take on teams in a similar position (that have one 2* and one moderately underleveled 3*). On the other, I don't know if that would make me available even earlier to maxxed teams as an easy target. Right now, I'm able to hit 500-550 easily and occasionally up to 600, but I'd really like to start hitting 600 points in PVP on a regular basis.

Thoughts from people who've made the jump?

It will probably hurt you in PVE, while not doing much for you in PVP. I think you would need some threats that you can score better with or scare off attackers in PVP.

I have my 3*s underleveled at 104, and I start seeing the 166 wall between 500-600. So I don't think leveling will affect your MMR. Don't think you will see the matches with the opponents you are hoping to see.
  • I was in the same exact situation several months ago. I never hesitated and maxed out my Thor to 166. I have not regretted it. I now hit 600 in PvP and finish in the top 100 99% of the time. My highest score has been 737. Once I hit 600, I start seeing maxed out teams but it's nice to hit 600 (extra 25 HP and a great chance of winning a 3* cover). To go much higher, you'll need another level 166 3* hero. Make sure you have 5-6 colors between the two of them. Good luck!

Who are the guys you can level up and where do their covers lie? This is a big factor.
  • My current contenders are:

    LazyCap 2/4/5
    GSBW 5/1/5
    BP 5/4/1
    Sentry 3/3/4
    Falcon 4/4/1
    CMags 5/2/2

I was planning to run LazyCap/GSBW for the time being - Cap being my first priority. I would be missing a black (I'd really rather run LDaken over GSBW, but he's only got 7) but that's the way the covers fell. At least they fell in the preferred way for these two.

Falcon is kind of useless in PVP unless I can get strike tiles out, but my BP only has 1 black cover so he's not up to par yet to pair with Falcon. Sentry is Sentry, but the lack of Hood to go with him hurts, plus I'm not to the point where I need to bomb yet so he's more of a liability on a regular team than helpful. CMags is heavy on defense with 5 yellows, but has a lot of color overlap with everyone else.

The other thing that worries me is knowing these are older characters and will probably be taken out of the token rotation soon, especially since Falcon and GSBW just had their PVP rounds. So I might be stuck at 11 covers for a long time.

Based on your options, I would just hold on to the ISO until you get better covers. I don't think leveling any of those guys will help your PVP, but it will likely hurt your PVE. None of the characters are strong/fast enough for you to make decent pushes, without burning thru healthpacks. You may be able to win some matches, but you might lose more points to attacks, while you're winning those matches.

While I love Steve Rogers, he is not a huge deterrent in PVP. I have mine underleveled at 104, optimally covered at 3/5/5. GSBW's powers are too expensive. Sentry just got nerfed, so he's not as valuable as he once was. CMags might be an option, but I don't see a decent partner for him with the options/covers you have listed. If anything, using shields is your best bet in PVP. I used to never use them, but now it's hard to not consider using them.
