Capturing goons and heroes

In Puzzle Quest Challenge of the Warlords (the first PQ game for people who didn't had the chance to play it), there was a capture mechanic which allowed you to mount some beasts and learn spells off of them.

First I want to explain how it worked for people not in the know. First prerequisite for AI to give you a capture option was that you defeated the same enemy three times before. In PQCOTW there was the main campaign with a solid story where you would fight your enemies similar to how we do now in PvEs. Instead of nodes there were cities and locations on the world map and monsters or NPCs would appear in these places or would block the paths going to them.

Onto the capture mechanic. Once you pressed "capture", you would be presented with a board with tiles positioned in a way that is an actual puzzle. You would need to clear the board via matching tiles before no moves is left. If you couldn't clear the board, then you could try again. Here are some examples and their solutions:

Also, you would need to have built a dungeon in your castle to hold captives, otherwise you couldn't capture enemies and learn spells (abilities) from them.

I would like to see similar mechanics in this game in the future. Capturing could give you Team-Up powers, covers, Iso-8, HP, limited use character (like a loaner) etc. Imagine using a goon alongside your team. There are many interesting things that could be done with a mechanic like this I believe.

  • I doubt they'll ever let you use goons on a regular basis but I wouldn't mind some themed team up nodes like say, Maggia Don + 2 of your characters against The Hood + OBW + Blade where you can use the guy who must have taught those 3 how to steal AP on your side.

Yeah, but it would be interesting.

Oh man, those screens brought back a ton of good memories.

RIP actual puzzles in a Puzzle Quest game.

I would love a mode like this. While I would at some point really like to play with a green-generating goon, I don't see them offering it on a regular basis. Using this kind of thing to farm team ups or boosts, though, I think could work.
