The Future of LR

So these LRs have been amazing, and the most I have competed in, in a long time. I think for me the reason behind this is because they are only 20ppl in each bracket so it makes it more exciting and gives more a chance for prizes and ISO.

I hope I'm not alone in asking the devs to maybe (hopefully) make this a standard for LR because, have to say, it's been a blast with these.

  • I'm having tons of fun playing too. That we don't just get a one-cover loaner to play with, but a fully covered one, makes it a lot more enjoyable.

Also, I like Thorette. I'm looking forward to getting her.

To me this seems like the kind of plea where I'd lean towards "devs know best". If you're into magic the gathering it's like full art lands or multicolored block, etc. sure it's amazing and everyone loves it, but part of you loves it because it doesn't happen like that very often, so when it does it feels special. I'll put it another way, if every pvp were in the balance of power or combined arms mold, they would lose their luster and people would be complaining about how tired and boring and grindy they are. Now that the devs know it's something we like, they can bust it out every now and then to spice things up and drive up participation, just like they do with the different tourneys between seasons.

These new lightning rounds also fix the tanking problem we've been having. I hope they keep it this way.

Perhaps the week between seasons can feature similar a style of Lightning Round event. I think that's frequent enough to make people happy, but rare enough to keep it special. With a bit of work, you can theme the Lightning Rounds around the character(s) due to be released in the next season.
  • I've won 20 anniversary tokens in these lightning rounds so far (first place 6 times, second place once) and I got to say. This is the first time I've ever bothered much with lightning rounds. But if they all had this reward structure, I'd play them much much much more often.
  • Is love them. It feels like a real "lightning round"', you play it for 15 minutes and you have to play the matches fast or be left behind by the faster teams. I would play them all the time if they were like this.

For what it's worth, while I enjoy the new style more than the old style, they really don't make much difference to us lowbie players. Speed and strong rosters are still what wins, and that means I never, ever win. I think the community is just enjoying the fact that the reward structure is top 25%, as opposed to worse.

    1) who is on your roster that you are not able to compete?

    2) Are you not getting tons more iso and tokens than normal? I don't know your roster, but if you have not been able to compete, I would think the tokens, cover drops, and iso would be doing wonders for your roster.

I personally have loved the 20 person LR, but I do feel that it is too small of a pool and from a Dev perspective it is giving out too many rewards. If you can get 10 times the rewards from lightning rounds than PVP why play PVP? Now with PVP you get the garunteed 3* for top 100 so I know that. I think for regular LR a 100 person bracket would be a good alternative. They would give out more rewards, but will not be so crazy.

On a side not I think the Dev's should keep the ISO drops they way they are. As it is right now transition and 3* teams are HP rich and ISO poor and 2* is usually opposite. If the Dev's keep the ISO drops the same once players get into 3* land they will be able to acurally level and play with the 3* characters they have. I personally have around 230k iso and need an additional 1,200,000 ISo if I wanted to soft cap all my 3*. I have 16 max covered 3* and only 5 max leveled. Dev's keep the ISO going so we can actually play with all of our characters!!

How do you know if a feature was fun, successful, and too good too be true, no one wants to see it go.
  • I really like the 20 man bracket structure. I want this type of format to stay. Or at least something like 50 or even 100 man would be okay too.

The smaller brackets are the key for me as well. As someone else said, it feels like a real lightning round with a select (random) group of competitors. I saw names on the leaderboard this week I've never seen before, and it has been ages since that was true. That and takes advantage of the idea that you don't *need* to play more than 20 minutes or so if you don't want to. You can win these rounds right at the end or playing hard from the start. Both are just as valid a strategy.

That and Lady Thor is just... wow what an interesting character. They really have brought something new to the game with charged tiles, and I can't wait to see what other characters come out that use them.

And here I was expecting a thread about the future of Lisa Ryder - her career has nose dived a bit since Andromeda

I rarely bother with the lightning rounds as you have to play solidly for a long time to place well and the rewards are crummy if you are not iso farming - what I loved about the Lady Thor rounds was that I could dive in with 10 minutes to go and still place well, a very welcome change and friendly to casual play

As a player it's fun because the rewards are huge and it's super easy to score well even with minimal effort.

I don't actually think this is good for the game long term though.
I suspect that people LOVE this so much strictly because of the rewards.

Suppose the rewards were scaled back to reflect the 'effort' needed to do well relative to say a typical PvE of PvP.
For example, first place would get 500 ISO and 1 heroic token.

Do you think people would still genuinely love this format because of a genuine sense of competition and excitement? I'm inclined to say no.

I feel there's much more competitive pressure in higher bracketed events that leads to a more satisfying victory should be lucky enough (I've never actually won an old style LR before). I'm not saying the bigger the bracket the better as I feel these 5000 player season brackets take things too far in the opposite direction. 20 people is too small though. I've managed top 2 several times in the LR's without even trying due to strategic start times.

It might be fun to test out 100 people and see how that goes.
  • Love the 20 person rosters, double iso, and enjoying playing with a strong loaner. The flip side is that I am sick of fighting against strong loaner and there are still 7 to go. Personally, I get tired of the featured characters during a standard LR and there are 6 of them that rotate. The same one 24 times is a bit much for me.
  • What I like:

    1. Small brackets
    2. Double Iso-8 (it's because of anniversary but still. it doesn't mean we can't have it in future LR rounds.)
    3. Fully covered featured character at a reasonable level (100)

    What I don't like:

    1. Single featured character (doesn't apply to this specific LR cos I like lady Thor)

I'm a casual player. I played 3 or 4 rounds yesterday. I got 2nd in my bracket the first time I played with something around 200 points. Since then I haven't been able to place above top 10 or reach 200 due to tons of retaliations/attacks while I'm trying to climb. I played 2 rounds today already. I have a transitioning roster, so I believe loroku.
