What is the point of loaners in PvP?

I think they should be optional. Since they are only one cover and at minimum level, you have no way of knowing their true power. My idea of how this would be is that the game would still place the loaner in the middle at the character selection screen but lets you replace it with whoever you want. They would still be advertising the new character this way eventhough it's not a good way to advertise as I explained above. Making the loaner optional makes the team compositions more varied as can be seen in the last two PvPs where there is no loaner. Actually in Combined Arms you had to choose a character out of 1, 2, and 3 star.png rarities but that's beside the point.

Last season I also played quite a bit of S.H.I.E.L.D Sim where there wasn't a loaner and I enjoyed it a lot more than regular PvPs where you are supposed to select only 2 characters for your team. I think the game is more fun when I can select all 3 of my characters for the team.

The point is probably just variety. Having a mandated loaner is an attempt to keep things fresh and interesting from event to event.

Once they nerf 2-man (or even 1-man) PvP power combos, I think the events will become more interesting and varied as team comps will matter more. For now, there are strong enough 2-man combos that it really doesn't matter who the loaner is.
  • The reason there are so many varied rosters is because combined arms forces the breaking of established teams.

    Why are there loaners?
    1. It prevents the same roster of 3 characters from dominating PVP the entire time. (Sentry-Daken-Hood at high end)

    2. It separates PVPs into themes.
    3. It rewards players for having leveled up featured characters.
    4. It forces players to try at least 1 different combination with the loaner character. Whether or not the player chooses to use any of their powers is their own choice.
    5. Players actually try to get/improve their character when it's featured -> $ for d3.
  • Some of the points you've made I haven't considered like Sentry, Hood, Daken. I thought making the loaner optional would bring more variety. Maybe I was wrong. Still it feels a fresh experience when I can choose all of my team members. Probably because I usually don't have a maxed loaner.
