The "No Boosts Allowed" PVP Event

*Disclaimer: I know that your defense team is based off of the last battle you've fought with, but just go with it!*

Let me tell you a secret: your PVP defense team hates their job. Event after event, week after week, they go into battle against countless players using their boosts, desperately trying to fend them off with not even a single AP to work with. And what do you do to thank them? Nothing. They never receive any AP to make their jobs easier, and then you complain when they lose because of it!

It's time for a change.

Every player's defense team decided to band together as one to sabotage the boost system for this one PVP event. No more turn one Feral Strikes or Thunderclaps, no more 20% boosts against X-Men or Dark Avengers, and no Red Iso-8 boosts to certain characters. Will you cower without your boosts, or will you show everyone how it's done?

May the best team win.

P.S. I wanted to incorporate the "Big man in a suit of armour. Take that off, what are you?" quote from the Avengers movie, but I'm too lazy to think of one. Happy New Year, everyone!

  • I can agree with this wholeheartedly. 99% of the time I forget I even have them and do just as well without them. Only time I have truly ever relied on boosts is versus the level 200+ pve missions.
  • I'm still new, so I have to stock up on the Rainbow AP to stand a chance against people with significantly higher leveled characters than I do. I'd love to be independent of boost in the future, though. It would save me plenty of Iso-8.

If you see an enemy team that's too hard to beat, use the Skip button. There's no cost to using it, so just skip like crazy until you see something easier to handle. And stop spending your ISO on boosts, you can get plenty by just playing.
  • I use boosts all the time when the ISO rewards are 70/140. It's basically a wash and you will save time and damage, allowing you to fight even more and go further up the reward ladder.

I'd like to see an option where you can buy 'defensive boosts'. Where, if an opponent attacks you, he will be facing a team that already has +3 AP across the board.

Oh, the skip button and I are best friends these days. 95% of the time the easier opponents would only get me about 10-12 rating in the higher brackets, so I have to resort to play against the big shots if I'm going to get a decent amount of rating per battle. Maybe I should tank a bit?

Also, defensive boosts would be great, but how would they work? Would the boost work for a certain amount of battles, or a certain amount of time? And other than the AP boosts, the boosts in general don't have a defensive correlate that wouldn't be useful except for specifically themed battles (Mutant or Avengers events). Maybe there could be some new ones created, like having a Protect tile spawn every (other) turn?
  • Those of us who routinely don't run boosts won't really notice any difference in such an event. It'd be No Holds Barred all over again, but slightly less interesting.

However, the net effect of this kind of tournament would also be to squeeze out newbies who are running 1-star and 2-star teams because they literally don't have anything better to run with. Without boosts, they have a very hard time competing with 100+ Ragnaroks, Magnetos, etc., and won't be able to place.

    This.

I don't use boosts except in PvE and at the very end of tournaments that I want to place in. If you're reliant on boosts your characters will suffer, since you're putting all your ISO into boosts instead of into leveling. Yes, if you use a 200 ISO boost and 100 ISO boost then you very slowly gain ISO in PvP. But that's ignoring opportunity costs. If you're excited about the 500 ISO rewards from the Hulk tournament, then realize that every 5 PvP matches is its own guaranteed 500 ISO reward. If you have a way of keeping your characters healed (high level Spidey, OBW, or Wolverine tanking) then you can make a lot more ISO by doing PvP than you can through the same time investment in Hulk (unless you miraculously pull the 500 ISO reward first time, every time). That's why Lightning rounds are so profitable -- lots of very quick matches.

Anyway, offtopic. I'm all for the tournament, but realize that you're harming the low and middle players way more than you are the high end ones. In NHB I ran Spidey/Rag/Mag, never using boosts, and only using health packs if I got really unlucky and Spidey died. And even then it was just 1 pack. But most matches I ended full health since I could easily get a heal in before finishing off the stun locked enemy team.

Ahh, good point. Ironically the event that I suggested would hurt me the most. Well, how about this: Instead of removing boosts altogether, let's make things more fun? If they introduce Domino/Black Cat/some other probability/luck based character, how about make an event where the boosts are randomly assigned? There could even be negative effects assigned to your team as well. Maybe there's a lightening storm that stuns one person on each team every three turns? Or there's an AP decay that makes you lose a random AP once per turn? Maybe one member of the enemy team has been stuck with confusion and has a 40% chance of hitting their teammates if they get a match? The possibilities are only bound by the programming.

Think about it as Mortal Kombat's "Test Your Luck" mode, but, you know, without the blood and murder. To avoid hurting the new players just as much as my former idea, perhaps you could be allowed one or two slots to place your own boost and have the random effects assigned as soon as you press Fight.

Or they introduce Deadpool and he does this intentionally from time to time icon_twisted.gif
