Does shielding in PVP work or is it a scam?

So I'm shielded in Predator And Prey, doing my best to win a few covers of Sentry (as it stands with 25 minutes, I'll be lucky to scrape 2). During the past 24 hours I've shielded a few times for a few hours or 8, but why is it that during those periods I'm very rarely attacked (if at all) but as soon as my shield expires - BOOM. You've been defeated by 5 people each for 20 - 30 points taking you down from your current spot (I was in 1st with a low score of 770) to a lowly spot where you're left wondering how it all works. You try to win the first match after shield expiry then you smile, then collect your lashes again - BOOM, you've been beaten again....!

We've all had it happen but the way it happens seriously leaves you with no other train of thought other than "It's a trap" break out the lightsabres! icon_evil.gif

There must be lots of posts regarding shields, but what's the mechanism for broadcasting your shield expiry to the whole community (in game) so that you now start appearing with your trousers down poised and ready for six of the best? icon_rolleyes.gif

Are you visible to people who attack you when you're shielded or do they not know?

Why aren't you attacked more when your shield is up (She cannae take any more Cap'n, shields failing.... icon_e_biggrin.gif)

There was a time where shields didnt hide you from other players, and do you know what happened? People would just keep on attacking shielded guys. The shielded guys didnt lose any points, and the attackers gained points. This meant that scores beyond 2k were extremely easy to get as people just kept on doing that and skyrocketed points upwards, causing pvp to be even more of a grindfest than it was now.

I also dont get your logic: you know that you get attacked immediately at high point totals without shields, so why would you expect anything different after breaking it?

    The mechanism is shield expiry/breakage.

Shield status is not visible in your nodes. You're generally

When you shield, you're typically taken out of the opponent pool for the event. Ergo, people queueing up fresh targets after you've shielded up shouldn't be able to queue you. However, people who queued you up before you shielded will still have you in their nodes, which allows them to attack you later.

Well my logic wasn't supposed to be convoluted in any way, merely trying to understand how shielding works and whether or not you know the person you're in combat with has an active shield or not!

As far as I can tell I've not been able to see if someone that I'm fighting has an active shield and therefore he/she's might be protected. So why do you suddenly lose a fist full of dollars the instant it wears off if your shield status is not broadcast/visible in some way to the bracket you're in!?!? icon_rolleyes.gif

Ahhhh, this makes sense. Thanks for explaining the mechanics behind it. icon_e_biggrin.gif

Not necessarily broadcast but you are definitely back in the pool as soon as your shield goes down. And if you shielded trying to protect a good score you are likely a choice target for anyone who happens to be looking and will hit you as soon as they find you. This is why shield hoppers usually recommend only a few minutes to fight with your shield down at higher scores, also why sentry is the current champion, he has tons of drawbacks but he is fast.
  • You usually shield because you'd be an attractive target at those points so of course when the shield expires you do find yourself in a position that caused you to shield in the first place. If you shielded at 300 points I'm sure you'll find plenty of peace and quiet even after your shield expired.

Maybe there's just a contracted match pool at high points, but I swear that it feels like it puts people who broke most recently at the top of the match queue
  • So with shielding, do you keep that exact rank you are at when you shield? Does your rank drop as people surpass your total points for that pvp event? I haven't really messed with shielding, but I'm trying to play more competitive in this game after playing it for acouple months. I'm averaging around 500-700 points depending on how badly I want a cover and I'm finding myself getting clobbered left and right by a lot of 3 star teams.

    Shields protect points, not rank.
So people can pass you, yes.
