How many characters is the correct number.

We at about to hit 50 characters upon the next release (It seems to be Dr octopus.) I know new players are overwhelmed by how many three stars there are already (26 of 49), and veterans are always trying to predict the next. I'm wondering if anyone thinks there will be an end to new characters and if so at what number. Coming to the end of year one we will have should have 50. A nice round number, but I feel there are still a bunch of characters that are a must. Cyclops, rogue, night crawler, professor, Bishop. And that's just x-men. Maybe 100 characters would be overkill? What do you all think.

  • They'll keep introducing them until the game is no longer profitable or the license runs out. New characters are almost certainly the source of most of their revenue.
  • There's too many now, as evident by the token problem they are having.
  • They will eventually fix the token problem, any solution is better than what they have now. I agree with Ben, they will never stop releasing new characters. I think they will eventually start releasing new characters at a faster rate in the future.

    This one is easy.

The maximum number of characters that should be in the game is expressed by "N + 1" , where 'N' is the total number of characters currently in the game.

And the more characters we get, the more enticing those HP sales look to newer players. I think its safe to say were already at a point that without lucky draws, its gonna take a few months to cover max a 3* character. Ya know, since we generally get 12 sets of cover rewards from PvP a month.

I just hope they look at the price of roster slots and look to drop the price for them. Roster slots are just getting crazy expensive. You can buy a 3* cover for less than 2 roster slots. Lower the cost of roster slots and more new characters won't be a problem.
  • It's not D3's fault that people hoard characters pointlessly. If there's a 'character lasted used' stat I'm sure people will be surprised at how little use some of the characters get, even factoring in essentials. That's not to say I don't hoard characters pointlessly but that's my problem not D3's. For PvP you only need about 5 characters. For PvE it's a bit more but half of the PvE events required only 1 character, and heroic events it usually won't do you much good for having the useless guy that wasn't an essential. For example I got Psylocke sitting at level 110 and she's pretty darn useless in all the heroic events where she's allowable but not required, and I don't see the point to level her up to 166 either, and this is someone who has a significantly higher than average chance of being required in event based on history.

I think of it this way....how many Marvel heroes and villains are there?? Gianormis right? And everyone is going to have at least one of those people be there favorites. So as long as this games lasts, they'll keep pumping out new people until no one plays this game anymore. Because of that, I'm really hoping for a better Spider-Man. icon_spiderman.png is the ish! Also, it's why I can't wait for Gambit and Cyclops. Those two, IMO, should be very fun to play with!
  • Before we can throw away useless characters we have to account for Heroics that lock your roster to like 8 people. Not having the 2*s that are available there can possibly hurt you. Then there is the star.png / star.pngstar.png / star.pngstar.pngstar.png tournament format they introduced. There are reasons to hoard.
  • I have fifty slots, all full, but there are quite a few i would be willing to drop in an instant. A lot are kept for heroics
  • A weak 3* that's underleveled is only useful if a node requires that hero. Maybe someonel ike GSBW can still be useful at low level with max covers but most heroes that do straight up damage like Psylocke are just pretty useless if not well leveled that it doesn't matter if they're part of the 3 3*s that you can use. The last heroic Jugg had Thor/Falcon/Hulk, and you could've easily done the mission without the latter two, especially if you're on the transition phase where you're not going to have level 5 Redwing (and that's literally all Falcon does), and here we're talking about two characters that are actually pretty decent (and Falcon is top tier in PvE), but it still wouldn't have mattered. No you shouldn't get rid of characters if you can afford the room, but you really don't need most of these guys. I like the option of having everyone just in case but I know there are characters that I haven't used in months not counting PvP, and a low level hero for PvP is arguably worse than a loaned hero anyway because you need to heal him and he has better chances of taking abilities away from your team. For example the loaner Beast does not have green, so you don't have to worry about him wasting green AP on defense, and since Beast is practically useless, the fact that you don't have to worry about randomly throwing away green AP on defense definitely outweights whatever meager offense a low level Beast can possibly do.
  • In a heroic, you need as many warm bodies as you can have, because otherwise you're going to run out of health before you complete all the nodes. Even the weaker 3*s (or 2*s or 1*s) are useful in a heroic simply because they're taking damage someone else would be taking otherwise.
  • Everyone seems to feel that d3 is only releasing characters for money. Although I understand it is a source of income for them, I think they want to keep the game interesting. Once you far in the game the cost of roster slots doesn't seem so bad. I'm at 650 for another slot, buy I have 3400 hp because i don't need anything they offer. I shield, shield hop occasionally, enter the buy in tourneys, and still seem to accumulate iso. Most people spendoney in their infancy of the game. You may be right that they shall not stop releasing but few players are going to shell out cash for their 50th roster slot.
  • The number of new characters so far seems to be about 1-2 per month. If they decided to milk it a bit more, then all those 3*s would have 2*s with very similar setups.

If I could just earn enough HP between 3* releases to upgrade my alliance I'd be happy. But 1800 HP is quite a lot to save up when we just got Colossus 10 days ago. Sure Doc Ock will be a week out, but still, that's a new character every 2 weeks.

Once I've upgraded my Alliance to 20, new characters being released are likely to be the only thing that keeps the game interesting to me. Well, that and my desire to complete everything. I can't be alone in that desire, but I'm slowing myself down by building an Alliance as well. I'm sure there are more than a few players who have every existing character already and a huge glut of Iso & HP.

"level 100 Psylocke + Bagman + Hawkeye versus level 90 Bullseye + 2 Pyro, I think we can take them"

Though it's pretty satisfying when this does work.
