Chiming in to let you know that an excellent blog has gone up today at the Demiurge Studios site. The topic of discussion is the creation and implementation of Colossus in Marvel Puzzle Quest.

You can find the story here:

'Colossus - Real Steel' (http://www.demiurgestudios.com/blog/colossus/)

Quote:

"As Colossus’s designer, I did a bunch of research on his personality and abilities before meeting up with other MPQ designers and engineers to talk through ideas. Here were the three characteristics that I felt best represented him --

Protecting his friends and allies
Transformation between flesh and nearly-indestructible metal
Punching really hard"

Comments

  • "nearly-indestructable metal"... not sure where in the research the nearly part was determined to be strike tiles icon_e_wink.gif
  • "We have a good set of guidelines that help us assign abilities to colors.. So for example, Red is good at brute force (direct damage) and Purple is tricksy (manipulation of AP and tiles)."

Cool article, I really enjoyed it. I have a question about the above excerpt.

It seems that lately, the "guidelines" have become a little lax. I say this because of countless posts where people have argued a certain power didn't belong with a certain color, and other forumites would argue that the "guidelines" weren't followed often anymore.

Can we have a copy of these guidelines? I am sure many of us are curious to know what your guidelines EXACTLY say about the other colors in the game.

    RED - Direct Damage
PURPLE - Manipulation of AP and Tiles
    GREEN -
    BLACK -
    BLUE -
    YELLOW -

If you ever have a question, ask Nonce. He'll know more than anyone. At least that's what I'm slowly finding out.

It was an interesting read. I really like Colossus. He's a triumph of concept into execution, unlike Beast, who's concept is cool but the execution is abysmal.

It would be nice to know how they determine AP costs for abilities.

Are there similar articles for other characters? If so, does anyone know where to find them? If not, why was Colossus the only one to get such an article? I would really like to read similar articles on all/most of the other characters and some of the decisions involved in their development.
