Patch and IM40 Advice
So currently have a 4/4/5 Patch. I had initially planned to run him 5/3/5 because I never could get red to go off effectively (he usually only has 2 or 3 tile colors). However, I find that 4 strike tiles is a lot to deal with already. I drew a red cover and am wondering opinions on going to 3/5/5
IM40 currently at 1/4/2 and picked up a 3rd yellow. At this point, I don't see the need to add the 3rd yellow but I could probably be convinced with a good argument (I like the idea of using 13 covers for a character - this is one of the few that it doesn't seem to work for, though)
Appreciate your opinions and advice. Thanks in advance.

My main 3 are GSBW 5/3/5, IM40 5/4/4, and Patch 5/5/3. I pretty much just use IM40 as a tank for blue and yellow, plus his Awesome countdown to get green and purple for GSBW, but he works great for that. I wouldn't go to 5 yellow, I never use black ap and I wouldn't want the extra yellow ap cost.0

I'll give you my opinion, but it is one of a casual player who doesn't come by 3-star covers easily and has a 4/3/5 Model 40.
I too like 13-cover characters because I want to get the most out of them (health & power). My strategy since being able to retrain characters has been to train all covers I received for a character until I had the preferred build. For example, if I wanted a green cover to max a character but got a purple I'd add it anyway, level them up with iso, and swap for the green when I could.
That all being said, Model 40 was the first 3-star character I leveled above 100 and that's in part because because the first 5 covers I had for him were yellow. Imagine my disappointment. I kept him in my closet for a long time.
My next level 100 character was GS Black Widow. Ugh. I played around with these two as a team in PvE because I was anxious to use my "cool" characters. They weren't PatchNeto-level attackers but I learned how to use them together with Model 40 feeding Widow AP.
Long story short, I've grown to appreciate Model 40 and will probably build him 4/4/5. While his red and blue are devastating, setting them off are not always a sure thing. Because of that, When I use Model 40 I have him in there as plan B. If I my plan A takes too long to pull off I put out my yellow tiles and end the match in a couple turns.
It really comes down to what you expect from him. I feel since he's not a killer, if you treat him as support that's what you will get from him.
How often are you going to bring him into battle though? Only in LRs when he's buffed most likely, so is he even worth it at all?0 -
Not using IM40 much now just because I usually have better options. My concern is that you can't respec back to 2 covers, so I don't want to add it and regret it later.0

He is better with 2 yellow - I built a second one just so I could have him without 3 yellow. He isn't ever going to be one of your top heroes so you have to decide how you might use him. 2y means he can generate red and blue fairly quickly for cap, and makes him worth having for PVE and early PVP. There is an argument that 1y is even better because of the cost - 6y for 9r - pair him with cap, or ht to exploit the quick red or make tbti awesome when patch owns all the tiles.
I have had a 3/5/5 patch for a while and still like this build. Use Iron man as above if you want to fire tbti - I just prefer it as an option if the rest of my team gets wiped, and I find 3 strike tiles for each side much easier to manage.0 -

Pretty much why I'm sticking with my 5/3/5 build even in the new-Mags era. TBTI is great, but 14 AP is quite a lot for a popular colour with only a handful of (somewhat lacklustre) methods of accelerating it.
Yes, six strike tiles are dangerous but you just have to play Patch differently - 3/5/5 you can pop BR pretty much at will and get use out of the strike tiles for longer, 5/3/5 is for one-turn nuking. I run Patch with BP quite a lot and as soon as I can get 9 /12 it's game over. There might be some stragglers with 1-2K health left like Thor or Hulk but my BP isn't maxed yet and one or two more basic matches will sort that out. Alternatively I can bust out Battleplan first, and then use the strike tile bonus to really mess up the big meatbag with Berserk Rage.0 -
Don't apply the 3rd yellow for IM 40 if you actually plan to use him... I used to have a x/x/3 IM 40, he was horrible. Deleted him and am liking the 2 yellow much more. You can build a duplicate 5/5/3 IM 40 much later for the completeness' sake if you want If you need a tank on yellow/red/blue, lazy Cap is right there...0

I also debated whether to add the 3rd yellow cover to Iron Man, and overall I'm glad I did add it. I always run him with someone that has a good Green ability, so those 6 extra greens are very handy. I pretty much only use his red and blue abilities as finishing moves, so taking a couple extra turns to get the additional yellow match usually isn't a big deal.0

Thank you all for the advice. It was a great help, I went the following directions.
IM40 - Sold the yellow, remains at 1/4/2. I figure it will be long time before I get him to 5/5, so no need to force myself to a 3 yellow build yet. This way I can revisit the issue later, and who knows, he might get buffed someday.
Patch - Went ahead and respecced to 3/5/5. Not sure if that is the final build but I know what 5 green will play like and I am not sure how 5 red plays. Since I have no plans to move Patch past 110 for now, I am going to try this build out and if red is still ineffective and inconsistent, start looking for 2 green covers.
Hairy Dave - I love playing Panther with Patch, but mine is still too undeveloped to be really useful. Getting Panther covers may prompt the switch to 5/3/5 more than liking/disliking TBTI0
