Playing advice?

Hello,
I have been playing this game since almost release date. I have a large selection of characters but I find that I generally do not score as well in events as other people in the event with much lower level characters. As and example in the current PVP event the third place player only has one character at level 135 and one at 94, the next highest is 70, yet I am in 79th place with much higher level characters. I have a feeling a lot of it has to do with how I am playing, so looking for some ideas

Although I have played a long time I have never spent any money so it is rare for me to get the three star covers I really need. I currently have 30 characters in my roster but I tend to only 9 of my top 11.

Hulk - 10
Doctor Doom - 127
Iron Man - 127
Human Torch - 114
X-force Wolverine - 111
The Hood - 99
Ares - 94
Captain America - 94
Storm - 94
Thor - 94
Black widow - 91 (working on maxing to 94)
Loki - 76
Daredevil - 76
(Lots more but cannot max any to level 94)

In general I tend to combo them as follows
Ares and Black Widow
Thor and Storm
Iron Man and Human Torch
Hulk and Doctor Doom

I also tend to not use health packs or boosts to often which is probably a dumb idea. I keep waiting for an event to have covers I really want before using them but they do not seem to come up often. I also find myself focusing alot on PVE events, i feel like I get way more rewards playing those

Just to clarify your current situation, could you answer the following questions?

    1. How many points did you have at 79th place, and how many points did your bracket leaders have?
    2. Do you shield at the end of PVPs?
    3. How do you usually time your climbing, i.e. what kind of rough schedule do you follow for gaining points?
    4. What level are your opponents, typically?

  • Hello,
I am not sure how many points I have but right now I am 29th with 612. The higher ranks are not looking more like they belong with a lot of 166 characters.

I do not shield usually. I do not want to spend money on the game and am not sure if its worth shielding.

For climbing I usually try to just time it so when my characters recover I use them again. I work on weekdays so its harder but on weekends usually every 5 hours I can go again. Sadly the events usually end at midnight for me so I always miss the last 3 hour push.

Opponents are mostly level 94 for the entire event. I sometimes run into a few higher that I skip if the characters look stronger then mine. I also tend to skip every one with black widow or thor if I can.

Ah, I see. The current PVP structure generally isn't very friendly to your current playstyle. Not playing the last three hours while unshielded means that you're a prime target for high-level rosters entering the event late and sniping opponents for fast climbs.

I'd say that shielding is likely worth it if it gets you an extra one or two covers for a 3* that you want and have the roster space for. However, 2 3* reward covers does mean ending in the top 10 which, if you're now seeing multi-L166 players in your T10, would be quite difficult for a transitioning player who doesn't shieldhop.

Generally, the two avenues for maintaining good placement till the end are: 1. actively play through the end, or 2. shield until the end.

Also, try to end a play session with a victory using Ares + OBW, or a Hulk team. Unless they're retaliating against you because you hit them, opponents will almost always see the last team you won a fight with. Ares + OBW is a fairly scary defensive team, and a high-level Hulk is a decent deterrent, as well.
  • To build a bit of what HM said, when it comes to shielding, don't worry too much about spending the HP if it will translate into covers you want, and will often result in you getting that HP back via rewards.

If you can make it into the top 25 of your brackets you will end up with 2 covers for a 3* character 50HP, plus the HP you'll earn for progression rewards,(which we will assume is at least hitting 600 points for 2 x 25 HP). So you'll spend one 3-hour shield of 75HP, but you'll earn 100 HP (a net of +25 HP) and 2 covers. Top 50 gets you only 1 cover, but still the same profit of +25 HP.
Even just staying top 100 with 600 points will get you a return of 75 HP (25 for placement, 50 total from progressions) so you'll get 1 cover, and break even on HP.

All of this assumes you can play somewhere in the last three hours to throw up a 3-hour shield.

Add to this any alliance rewards you may be getting and you should still be coming out HP positive for each PVP. You did not mention if you are in an alliance, but if not, I'd suggest joining one. Even if your alliance is terrible, you'll get something, which is better than nothing. If you get into a top 500 alliance, you gain 25 HP each pvp, 50 for top 250. It's certainly worth it even if you don't socialize with them in any way. But you should. The people in my alliance are what has kept me in the game so long. Or at least with such intensity.

When it comes to boosts, you'll be given 3 +all boosts as progression rewards for each pvp. Don't let them hit a stockpile of 30. Use a couple each PVP to maybe get through one last fight if you've done a burst of fights to jump from one points area to another. Same thing for ISO boosts. If the average fight is expected to return 105 ISO, you can safely use 2-3 ISO boosts each match and still be relatively ISO neutral. When I'm trying to clear a lot of fights in a short time I may add 3 ISO boosts to help accomplish that prior to shielding. Think of each one as 40 ISO and it's really not too bad to boost for the occasional fight.

    Best of luck!
