While I have every character I want in my roster (Fury excluded), I don’t have anyone built well enough to do me any good in PvP. I lose about 60% of the matches I play. This has been going on for about 2 months now and I’m getting fed up. I hope there’s something I can do with my roster that will help me out, because I don’t think I should be this terrible at a Match-3 game.

Here is my roster showing my builds and who I can upgrade right now.

What can I do to improve my roster? I have 70K iso banked to level my guys. But I don’t know if I can do anything that will make a improvement at all. I also have enough HP to buy a single 3-star cover as well if that would make a difference.

I’m not looking to place first in every event or become a shield-hop master. If I could get to a point were I place top 100 on a regular basis (to start bringing in more 3-stars) I’d be happy. As it is now I’m usually bottom 50 of a PvP.

Here's a good real-life example. These are the nodes I have showing in Army of One and typical for me.

    Node 1 - 240 Punisher, 166 L. Thor, 166 L. Daken
    Node 2 - 249 Punisher, 166 C. Mags, 160 Patch
    Node 3 - 240 Punisher, 153 Patch, 104 L. Daken

I feel confident about winning Node 3. Node 1 is a toss up for me. I’ve lost to C.Mags & Patch teams enough to know they cannot be beat so I’ll skip that one.

What team do I have that’ll be able to compete with this? (My Punisher is boosted up to level 210.)
  • Not sure how you are not consistently in the top100 now, but that's another story.

You should be able to run Storm-Magneto to 300 points without retals. From there, rgy + support.

    Sentry or Ares for rgy
Hood or oBW for support (babyDaken can support Sentry)

This should get you up to 650-800 depending on the event. Shield at the tail end, either 1 8hr or 1 or 2 3hr shields depending on play schedule.

If you really feel the need to go higher, shield hop.

Spend the 15k iso on Sentry, save the rest.

As early in the PvP as we are, you may need to tank a little bit. Or you may be screwed by having 166s on your roster. If you start skipping do the options get better?

    Punisher/Hood/3rd wheel.

The 2nd node should be easily beatable with Pun/Hood/OBW for example. Just have to completely deny important enemy AP via Hood/OBW.

Skipping rarely gives me better options. If it does, it's usually something drastic like a 1-star team worth next to no points. I usually only skip a couple times and if I don't find anything better I go in because I figure a loss will help my MMR. It doesn't seem to though.

It's really gotten to the point where I'm wondering if I'm missing something gameplay-wise, which has happened to me before. For instance, I did an entire playthrough of Borderlands before someone showed me how to apply stat points. Or playing Kingdom Hearts without knowing I could change my weapon...
  • I'm not in a position to give much roster advice -- your roster looks better than mine, but I must say I'm impressed with your spreadsheet. I have my own spreadsheet but it doesn't look as nice as yours. I'll definitely organize mine the way you do from now on.

My recommendation, though it's not worth much, would be to level up Sentry and Lazy Daken and pair him with your Hulk and Hood depending on the battle. But, I'd be in a world of hurt if my nodes were looking like yours -- you have my sympathy. I hope at some point that tanking helps you lower those nodes. Godspeed, good sir.

Seems like tanking your MMR is probably your best option.

I'm just transitioning to 3* as well, but I tank every event that doesn't give top-tier 3* rewards, and I've seen some events (Too Many Secrets excluded) where 500 points results in a top 5 finish.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried running Storm/Mags in Army of One and didn't get far. When I'm going against maxed 3-star teams, my 2-star guys never last long so I only ever try to use my higher leveled 3-star guys because they have more health. Is this wrong?

Even with my 3-star guys, when I win I barely get by. Because I don't really have guys with synergy (that I've found) it usually takes a long time to build up enough AP to use any powers. As long as I'm winning, I can deal with healing. It's when I lose 3 or 4 games in a row where I know this game isn't worth my time.

Is there someone I should focus on trying to improve beyond Sentry, C.Mags, and L.Daken? How do these guys do when facing against a mirror team? Does defense have any advantages?

What's the fastest way to tank these days?

    (Sorry for all the questions.)
  • I vote Sentry focus as well. Get a good feel for how much damage you can do with his red, as well as how much you normally get off green + yellow. I don't have a good support team for him, but he is still so brutally strong it doesn't matter.

    I love your spread sheet.
You have 10 covers in the Hood with the all important 5 blue.
You have 8 covers in Lvl 89 Sentry. You have 8 covers in Thor Modern with 5 yellow.
You have 8 Covers with Magneto (Classic)
You have 6 covers with Daken Classic

I get the feeling that you are not afraid to SPEND some money on Hero Points.

So I am going to give you the RICH choice, Semi rich choice, and the typical choice.

The RICH choice is spend the hero points to get covers for Sentry and/or Thor and pair one of them with Hood or Patch and buy those covers as well.

The Semi-rich choice is to buy 3 covers of Magnetos blue and one red. Pair him with the Hood, and tear things up.
Note Magneto/Hood is a monster in Lighting Rounds and for harvesting ISO.

The typical choice, level Sentry to 102, and pair him with the Hood and hope for the best and that you will eventually get your 3 star covers to drop.

Just to be clear... In this game you're supposed to match 3 or more same-colored tiles, collecting AP of that color that is used to set off your character's abilities, right?

I just wasted a couple hours losing in the She Hulk event. I skipped until I found a team that looked beatable, used teams with synergy, an still got owned. I tried different teams, only healing She-Hulk. I lost 6 matches in a row.

I saw a team of Hulk and Model 40 - none fully leveled. I thought Storm and Mags might be good for stunning Hulk. I lost that game in three matches when the AI gave itself blue cascades. At least that one was quick because I hate losing after a ten minute fight even more.

I'm just at the point where I don't know what else to do. I don't have problems in PvE and usually end top 50 in those. I don't know what the difference is. Is there a free screen video capture iOS app that I can use to record a game or two for you guys to analyze?
  • One additional comment about tanking -- if I were in a situation as you describe, I would certainly try tanking quite a bit to see if I could get my PVP nodes down to where you start seeing some 1* enemies in them.

If you can spare a one or a few character slots, even temporarily, and fill them with level 1, 1* characters, you'll notice that low level 1* characters revive from being downed in 4-5 mins. This allows you to die easily/quickly when tanking and recycle the downed characters quickly.

I'm confused why you commented that you only healed She-Hulk. In PVP events with a sponsored character, you focus primarily on healing your 2 characters since you can choose the default option for the featured character (in this case it was She-Hulk) -- the featured character is healed for the beginning of each fight if you choose the one provided and not the one in your roster. Definitely try to save your health packs for your own characters.

If you are able to post a video, I'd look at it and I'm sure others would. I'm not aware of a video capture tool for iOS, but I'd be interested to know if someone finds one. Worst case, you could provide some screen shots and commentary.

From some lite Googling, I see that screen recording is not possible on iDevices, but there are apps ("AirServer" or "Reflector") that allow you to use AirPlay to strem your display to your Mac and then you can use a program on your laptop or desktop to record it.

Okay, I think I may have things under control for the time being. Thanks for everyone's continued support. I spent two full days losing, with my entire roster, in PvP. This has brought my opponents back to my levels and made the game playable for me again. Kind of rediculous the effort I had to put forth to correct a problem of the game itself. But that's another topic.

The idea behind only healing She-Hulk was because I was trying different support teams with her and wanted to keep her alive to keep playing. I see now that this was pretty stupid as I should have been using the loner She-Hulk for that experiment, especially since she isn't very leveled for me. I had a hunch I was bad at this game!

Now that I'm in a position to play again, where should I focus my roster? I'm weary of putting too much into Sentry because we all know it's only a matter of time before he gets nerfed. Same goes for Patch, but not as much. I did earn more L.Thor covers and wouldn't mind buying a couple green covers and maxing him out. Do I have good support for him?
I'm tempted to dump ISO into Spider-Man or Steve Rogers. I like both of those characters but I don 't know if leveling them up will actually help me out all that much.

See Polarity's Guide for some teams.

In your case, you have Hood. One of his best partners is Steve Rogers. They are my main team. Cap is a lot of fun to play. In general, if you can stall the other team for ten turns without getting hurt too bad, you've won with this team. It's a slow team, but I can grind fairly well with it.
