Simple instructions on defence

I know it wouldn't be the easiest thing to impliment but I would love to see the ability to set a defensive team and then set a couple of basic commands (say 3) for the AI to follow, moves that would make some combinations more effective. Example commands could include:

Target (colour) - ai attempts to prioritze matching that colour
Use/don't use (power) when (condition) - so could tell the team to only use Aries' onslaught when over 10 mana or not use supernova with less then 3 reds on the field ect, or even just don't use x power to allow the ai so save for y power
Do not match (colour) -

These would make a lot more teams viable on defence and would make the ai behave in a much more human way

In other words: implement a variant of Final Fantasy 12's gambit system.

This could be a nice addition to the game system for grinding as well. List a subset of simple AI strategies initially and collect the others. A rather ambitious take on collection would be to have players obtain covers and forge them into associated AI strategies. E.g. offer up a number of 2* Daken covers to obtain a 'favor matching green' strategy. This would also add a bit of value to older covers for established players and will stretch out 1* and 2* progression a bit for newer players (delaying the occurence of the stone-wall that is the status quo of 2* -> 3* progression).

No. Being able to manually set a defensive team would actually ruin PvP by leaps. Do you want to run against an entire legion or LThor's, LDaken's, Sentry's, Hood's just because it's the set team for your entire climb up the rankings?

Everyone would settle on one of a very small number of optimal defense teams. It would be awful.
  • There are other ways that defence could be improved. For example, did you know that Classic Hawkeye's Take Aim has a less than 24% chance of being placed where it will immediately match, with the AI often not matching it after it places it without matching? He's a liability on defense, helping the offense more often than his own side. Same with Bullseye, or numerous other characters that place tiles.

This system of setting defense sounds complicated to implement with little pay-off for a simple match-3 game. I don't think there's enough advanced players to put it into the system without scaring away more casual players.
