When is token outcome decided?

Curious if anyone knows or has evidence-plausible theories (I can tell you what I "think," but it's worth about as much as a sixth Bag-Man):

Are my token covers assigned when I win the tokens or when I open them? If it's when I win them, then there's no real difference if I wait until a tourney ends or when new characters or ratios are added to a particular token's pool.

I have waited until new characters are available to open packs, and gotten new characters.

There would be too much data involved to "pre-determine" your pull. Then when the servers crash or you hack your code, the results would disappear/change.

It is randomly rolled upon touching it and starting the shiny animation.

Schrodinger's token = you don't know what it is till you open them.
  • Because the content of a standard/heroic token can change over time, they'd have to be generated at the time of opening for the system to make any sense. Otherwise an old heroic token you saved would never have any chance to be Nick Fury or any new 3*s since they aren't available at the time that token is generated.

I think it'd be more like the token is a Nick Fury until you open it, then it isn't.

This explains how I received that dead cat from my Season IV tokens

That's a very glass half full attitude!
The rest of us baselined Bagman till they took him out of the tokens.

The token is simultaneously all possible characters until it's opened and it's identity crisis is solved.

It may be another factor rather than when you win them or when you click/tap on the token. It could be defined at the time you enter the recruiting area.

As others have said, it can't be at the time of winning it because available characters and odds change. So you'd think it's when you open the token. But sometimes my screen will flash before fully loading the token art that comes up before the cover art. I've seen a glimpse of the cover waiting under it. I was there once and saw Juggy flash briefly. Before I tapped on the token I lost my connection. Quit out and came back several hours later, tapped on the token and it was storm. I keep forgetting to test this theory more.

Also, probably a total superstition but I've seen and heard enough anecdotal info to make me wonder if waiting to cash in tokens results in a higher chance of gold covers.
