VS. Mode Multifunctionality

So I've noticed that the VS. mode screen is rather bland and there isn't much to it aside from the different circles you click on to fight other teams. I think there should be a minigame involved that would replace these circles with maybe tiles from the game itself, and when you win the battle it fills it in with a certain color, and you and your alliance are trying to match up the colors together to score points and clear the board.
I know that's a rather vague idea but I also feel like there is an opportunity to make the VS modes more interactive and fun.
If not this idea, then maybe something else?
