Good teams for defense?

I wanted to make this a separate thread from the "How the AI plays your characters" thread to keep the conversations clearer. For reference, check this thread out: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1242

Understanding how the AI will play your team, what are some good defense builds? Assuming a free-for-all tourney with no required or boosted characters, what teams would operate well when the AI is controlling them?
IMO, certain characters are worthless on defense. Like Black Widow Grey Suit... The fact that the AI chooses randomly for her purple ability means that you're highly unlikely to have her green ability go off, even if you don't have other green abilities on the team.
Also, certain combos don't work, like the Rags/CStorm combo, it's easy to pull off on offense, but since the AI won't spam Rags red and will use Rag's green before CStorm can use hers, it just doesn't work on defense.

I personally like Rags and Thor together, as they're both high-health guys that don't REQUIRE any synergy to be effective, and their redundancy means that even after they kill or stun one, the other is still a big threat. I'm torn on who would be a better third to put with them. Spidey is a bit squishy, but he is a must-kill-first, which draws attention away from Rags and Thor while they hammer away. Wolvie is another option, as he can use the green AP rags generates to good effect. IM40 would be my other consideration, as his Recharge is devastating on this team if it goes off, but the AI's incompetence when it comes to protecting it's special tiles is a strike against him.

Who is your ideal defensive team?

  • Daken is better than Wolverine on defense because the ai doesn't use Wolverine very well (though having rag with him helps a ton). Plus you add black and purple to your strong colors list.

I'm still figuring out what I like most for overnight defense but I've mostly narrowed it down to one of the following:
    Rag/Wolverine/Spidey
    Rag/Daken/Spidey (rainbow team)
    Rag/Daken/Wolverine
  • Rag/spidey/hood can be the best. People would go for spider first and the hood can steal tons of ap, while making it hard for offense team to take out spidey and feeding rag. Its also a full rainbow team.

If they go for hood, then prepare for 2 ap stuns, while hood leeching blue till he dies, helping spider.

    Two sides of blade.
  • Are there any decent defense teams for those of us without Rags, Spidey, & 3* villains?

Juggernaut. I'd consider him one of the best even including all the others.

Also, daken is hella annoying, even though 2* wolvie is probably stronger

    Yeah, Thor/Daken/Juggernaut

Daken's passive slows down matches, and your chances of getting through that fight without taking significant damage are small.
  • Makes sense, thanks guys!

I've been feeling foolish for putting points into Daken in a futile attempt to win a single match in the DA tournament. Good to know he may have use in my roster. icon_e_smile.gif
  • I imagine that most people look at teams as a combination of "how many hit points do I have to chew through to down these meatbags" and "how much damage will I take in the process".

Juggernaut is super-annoying for a 1-star, for instance, because he has both a decent number of hit points, and high-damage abilities that don't cost a lot of AP. Daken and Wolverine are both annoying for their healing, and Daken's passive can in some circumstances be worse than Wolvie's make-strike-tiles (especially if your team relies on green). Thor has relatively high damage. And Spidey can significantly slow down a fight.

The ideal team to whack is going to be one with relatively few HP, all other things being equal.

Yeah, it particularly annoys/deters Rag players, since matching green is a key part of using him. I'm tending to avoid Daken outside of the DA tourney.

And I've had some big upsets losing to teams with him too... sometimes the strike tiles are simply in unreachable areas, making it problematic.
