Cool Tournament Idea

Hey guys and gals,

So I'm bored here at work. I'm too busy to actually be playing MPQ, so here I was, running a train on these forums. Then something popped up in my head. It was tournament idea that I remember reading months ago on here, and it randomly hijacked my brainwaves. It was a pvp where you could use any team, but you could only use each combination ONCE.

A cool premise, right? I think a little tweaking would be necessary to make it fun or fair, like making it so you could reuse combinations after you've exhausted all options, something like that.

I know it'll never happen because, well, how do you monetize that (entry fee, maybe?), but I was curious to know what you wonderful people think about it. I think it would help (well, force) this roster diversity they've been shoving in our faces over the past few weeks, and maybe you'll find a new team you'll fall in love with. So, thoughts?

Also, I wanna know YOUR (that's right, I'm talking to you) ideas on cool, unique tournaments that'll put the thumbs to the screens and get the mice clicking furiously! icon_e_biggrin.gif

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaanndddd. . . DISCUSS!

  • I actually had an idea for a tournament recently.

Say there was a rotating color indicator underneath the pause button in the middle of the characters. Whatever color was being indicated is the color you needed to match to gain a.p. .

So basically if the tile showing was yellow for instance I would need to make a yellow match to gain a.p. for thunder strike. Any other color I matched on that turn would not go towards any a.p. generation.

I think that this would really encourage people to play with diverse rainbow teams and, have to really strategies their matches in order to win.

I think that'd be quite fun! (Quite possibly frustrating too) I think they would need to make some tweaks to the A.I. to accommodate, like making it take note of the required color so it will take it if needed. Because with the standard A.I., which is as dumb as an inbred koala cub that had been beaten silly by a cactus, it would probably end up being a standard match that just takes you longer to win. icon_lol.gif

    Still a good idea though
  • I'd like to see a PVP where everyone is usable but all one star characters are buffed.
  • I think pvp's should have 3 paths, one for 1*, one for 2*, and one for any *.

if you pick 1* you get to just face teams of 1*'s till you reach a certain point level, let's say 300 for instance. if you pretty much only have 1*'s, then the token is a good reward.

when you get to 300 all your 2* characters get unlocked and you face teams with.1 and/or 2 *'s until you reach another point total, let's say 600. at 600 all characters are now unlocked. you can face any team.

likewise if you choose the 2* path, you can use 1* and/or 2* characters till you reach 600. then like above, you can face any teams.

if you choose the last path, you can use any character, but you won't be able to face lower level teams till they reach 600.

any player with any roster can choose any path, but once you choose you cannot switch paths during the rest of that pvp.

for example, someone with all characters maxed, can choose the first path, but can only use their 1*'s until they reach say 300 then they can use their 2*'s too. then at 600, their entire roster it's unlocked.

this protects weaker teams to a point. and if a players mmr is too high, they can face weaker teams earlier, but on more equal ffooting.

two other point, if you choose 1* path, once you get 300 points, can use any 2* even if your score goes below 300 the 2*'s stay unlocked. also, one unlock characters, can use them in any retaliation fight.

this last part is what makes the system viable for better rosters, otherwise, weaker rosters would be overprotected.

this also means there is an advantage to starting early instead of waiting until the last minute.

you asked for my idea, you can start regretting it now.

A recent idea I had for a tournament was kind of like a double elimination/ round robin type thing.

You pick 3 characters, and the 3 you pick are the only 3 you can use for the entire event. But after you lose twice, then you are out. There would of course, be only 1 final winner, (or 1 winner per bracket), so the prize will have to be something really good.

I'm assuming those two losses would have to be offensive?

Yes, both losses will have to be offensive. Or it could even be that you are out after only one loss, but I prefer the double elimination style. Also, there would not be any points, just a record of how many wins you can get before you are out of the event. Person with the most wins is the winner. There should also be a limit on health packs. Otherwise everyone would play a match, heal, then play another match. Limiting health packs would force players to pick their characters based on strategy and not on sheer power. Then to use those characters as effectively as possible.

There can also be a hard core version with no health packs at all and no boosts.

a better idea is tournaments to have a better +/- point system, MMR should be based on the average level of the combined levels of your 3 person team. say you are attacking weaker teams you should get less points (5-15) from them no matter how many points ahead of they are from you. attacking teams of your same level or better the points should be better (20-40). i'm tired of getting knocked back -90 points at at time just because max level 3* teams can't fight in their weight class. and it'll be better for people who want to get like 1000 + points in a tournament, it'll get them the higher point opponents they need to advance since after awhile they only find themselves with only max 3* teams worth only single digits.
  • For the original idea, an outlier like Flo would love this tournament.
Everyone has to play through their whole roster before they can reuse a character? Well haha, my roster only has 3 characters, guess I get to use them again right away!

Haha, yeah, I thought about mentioning that in the original post, but I figured everyone would think it anyway icon_lol.gif

Other than him/her/it/whatever, I think it'd be interesting.

That does sound awesome. Maybe there would be a partial regen system, like when you played survival mode in one of the old PlayStation Street Fighter games. Earn a bit of health back after a win, no health packs.

That would be a true elite tournament. Maybe, also, if they could have a reliable matchmaking system, no choices of fight, no skipping. You hit "fight" and you're given a team to fight as you go in blind.

EDIT: since I mentioned the words "regen" and "health" this must be said: let's not start complaining about true healing here. We all know what it is, and complaints have no place in this thread. Thanks! icon_e_biggrin.gif
