When are you considered "joined" to an event?

I'm not sure if this belongs here or in the Events section.

But when are you considered "joined" to an event?

When you first click on it to see who is featured and the rewards?
When you make your first attack?

I want to be sure I am not inadvertently being placed in a bracket earlier than I intend to join the event.

    When you first COMPLETE a match. Win or lose, you are still placed in a bracket. I lost my first match in the Season 3 simulator, but I'm still ranked #4575 with 0 points.

    I was beginning to worry that I was joining just by clicking on the specific event.
