  • Each side has its own pros and cons.

Manga and anime IMHO tends to have a little more fantasy and supernatural. Characters also seem to live in some absurd worlds too. Like worlds where all problems are solved by playing a children's card game (Yu-gi-oh), or where bread making competitions are serious business, and your bakery depends on you winning them (Yakitate!! Japan). However, there are some that are a little more realistic or more "Western comic book" like. I could see a serious like Hellsing being a "Western" type of thing in a slight way. You got a super, genetically modified vampire killing vampires for the Protestant church whose arch rival is a super, genetically modified Catholic priest.

Also funny that you mention this too. Quite while back when X-2 was aired on TV, my sister commented on how she thinks X-Men might make a good manga series. Then I replied, "Well it is a comic book series, which is kind of like one".

No, the two often feed each other. Disney inspired Tezuka which was the start of Anime, and in turn Anime has inspired modern American animation, like Batman: The Animated Series, just to name one critically acclaimed one.

The same relationship goes for films and comics. Serialization of films has been around since the 50's and 60's in Japan & other countries (i.e. Zatoichi, Godzilla, etc.), and it's just now arriving in America in the form of the Marvel Universe films.

My experience is second hand through my daughter, Aramina. She had been passionate about anime and manga since age 10. At 26, she still loves both. A few years ago she started reading comics.

I read the manga she hands me. We've watched anime together. She has a marvel unlimited subscription and also buys the electronic copy of all her comics and has it all on my tablet. I read the series she recommends. I love American animation and Miyazaki. I read graphic novels.

So with that background...... There is no competition. They are different genres. I do remember how difficult it was sometimes finding her anime when she was younger as it was considered the same as animation in many US stores. It is not and often anime had much more mature themes.
