Major system slowdown on Android

After downloading and playing the game for several hours, the game has caused my system to slow significantly-- to the point where running other apps (Chrome, Gmail, even system settings) becomes nearly unusable. This happened in the past, a few weeks after the game launched, so I had to uninstall and quit playing, but I figured I'd give it another shot last night... same problem, had to uninstall.

Google has turned up nothing on this problem, sadly.

Currently running a Galaxy Tab 3, Android 4.3, no root. It previously occurred on a Nook HD+ running Cyanogen with Android 4.2 as well.
