Thanks for making the thread and posting info so far out!

Looks like PVP shards for 5's will follow an alphabetical order for all 5's (including Latests).  And PVE will continue - seemingly - following LLLCC and shards will be the 5E in progression, next 5E in placement.

Could make it easier to finish Latests, for sure.  That's a nice thing.

Did you predict Northstar for Shield Training, @bluewolf?

I mean the guy isn't in tokens yet, but whatever.
Honestly probably not.  Last time around the Latest 4s were Karolina, Wolfsbane, MODOK.  They replaced Wolfsbane with Northstar leading to him being required in ST; I could have seen them going with MODOK after Karolina and putting Northstar at the end.  Which would have meant MODOK in ST.

But we've seen them do lots of different things with essential orders so there's no real predicting it.  They pretty much do it on a seeming whim, or to create maximum pressure, etc.

Having a cover and shards for Northstar in placement in MRG and progression in HAT helps at least a little, I guess?  And then a cover (maybe more) for Northstar in Shield Sim might help you get through ST if that's important to you.

The good news for some is that if your goal is more covers for a 4 you can find them in the game rewards now.  So you're more likely to champ a 4 under new rewards than before, as long as they are a Latest 4.

However, any new 4 is, if not OP meta, barely important as you (assuming you are not a whale) will make almost no progress on them once they are not a Latest.  After that, they will basically sit at the bottom of your roster forever as you add a cover every 110 pulls or so and from PVP every 7 months.  I know people enjoy finding ways to make characters work together, but dilution ain't changing and a small, unchamped to barely champed 4 will not be getting much use regardless of their kit (again, other than the meta folks).

Northstar was almost a given since the 4* before him has appeared more than two events. I'm sure players will be unhappy about this but let's not forget that the devs has been really nice in the last 4 consecutive shield trainings requiring older characters.

I really didn't think the bean counters would let them give away shards through placement/progression on Latest characters like that. I was wrong.

I'm torn on this. You're right in that it will make it easier to get characters covered before they leave Latest, and that *is* nice. But I was hoping this would be a way to feature Classic 5*s more often to help get them covered better. Now we'll basically get one shot at them each year (or longer) when they're the 5*E and that's it. Not really doing much to help get older characters covered if you missed them when they were in Latest. 😕

Myself being a player that uses cp on classics i get 20% more 5* and 4* covers versus pulling from latests and can get a bit more on the characters in latest until they join the diluted pool of classics under this new system. I like this alot.

I guess I can't remember who the last 4 required were (Spidey 2099 was one right?) but I seem to remember still getting some black eyes and 0 covers! Apart from for Karolina and yeah...well, that still felt like I took a beating rostering her! ;)

M.O.D.O.K would'a been good, him I have at 209! Made Only (so) Daz Obviously Kills (it)!

    Okay.

So, I don't even understand why they would make it that hard. After all, SHIELD training will only yield one cover for the new character anyway. Also, that's one extra roster slot for everyone who earns it.

Northstar was almost a given since the 4* before him has appeared more than two events. I'm sure players will be unhappy about this but let's not forget that the devs has been really nice in the last 4 consecutive shield trainings requiring older characters.
That's... not how that works. To provide an analogy: "Oh, well, my abusive spouse did break my arm, but it's really alright because it's been at least 3 weeks since they last did that, they were very nice in the meantime!".
    1. ST is not the primary way to get a cover for a new character.  I mean sure, a player could potentially skip the PVEs and just get a cover from ST, I guess.  But you get covers at crazy low placement in the new release and the progression in the next event.  Which as you point out, drives roster slot demand - hence, why they do it.  It's not generosity really, it's "here's the new thing, oh and you'll need 1000/2000 HP to use it".  I suppose it's one of the tradeoffs in the game, they do work to keep it interesting and demand some resource expenditure as a result if you want to use it.

    2.  The devs have their "spreadsheet schedule" which I guess helps them avoid too much work planning stuff - just run LLLCC on both 4s and 5s for essentials and follow the cycle.  As has been pointed out before, the 4 who is rewarded for placing in the PVE that runs prior to ST starting, and is therefore essential for the new release, is always one of the ST essentials as well.  There are more Latests in the reward cycle so they are more often than not one of the essentials.

Other than tossing in a 7 day the 3/4 day events make it mostly very predictable.  When we end up with a set of all-Classic 4s in ST it's simply the way things shook out in terms of "here's who the schedule said was essential next".

I do not think for one second that the devs build their schedules towards ST and trying to make some easier than others - other than some tweaking on the Latest 3 4's and where in the order they fall (maybe).  Like I said, MODOK was a very valid choice for the PVE-Essential slot in ST but they went with Northstar for, I guess, pressure reasons.

Howzabout I offer to swap back my Karolina cover I got from ST for the new one instead, huh? Sounds fair (to me!).

How about changing Apocalypse rewards from Karolina to Northstar

That would definitely help. I would probably fall short anyway but it would be a fighting shot.

Just my personal experience, but I find pulling from Classics terribly inefficient. So even though you're getting one extra pull for every 100 CP spent, what's the quality of that pull?

I can probably count on one hand and certainly not more than two the number of useful 5* covers I've pulled from Classics. Useful meaning a non-saved cover or one used for a champ level; a missing cover that can be applied to an undercovered 5*. Champ levels are nice, no doubt about it, but my personal goal is to get all the 5*s champed, so any pull that doesn't contribute towards that goal is less than desirable to me.

For me, I've found the better way to fill in the gaps on those missing 5*s is to wait for them to be in a special store.

I'm up to 31 5* champs on day 1371 for reference. Hopefully 32 today if I can snag two yellow Goblin covers in the Sinister store. Even one will help make a difference, as my 334 Sandman would then need just six covers instead of 16 to finish him off. Barring Sinister, of the eight I don't have champed, only three have fewer than 10 covers. Those same three are the only ones that can't be fully finished by feeders.

In the past, new characters that appeared in essential for shield training appears thrice in PvEs as essential. That was the way I keep track of who the essential characters were.

After that, it became twice. My point is, requiring newer characters were already a norm and players were mostly unhappy with this setup. It's just that they throw us a bone once in a while, and it happens that they threw us 4 bones consecutively.

The way I keep track of shield trainings now is based on how many covers I have for newer characters. If I have at least 10 covers slightly before shield training and most of it came from PvEs and release events, the probability of it being that character will be low. Northstar is the one furthest away from 10 covers.

Requiring newer characters that has appeared thrice in PvEs (including Alliance Event) is not a norm anymore. Twice is.

Do you spend money on the game at all?

Different players have different styles. I play to progression in story and usually to the 10 cp in versus. I rarely spend. When I do it's for a really good store if I'm a couple hundred away from a 10 pack.  I'm on day 2139. I have 13 5* champed. To me no 5* pull is undesirable so I'm ok with more dillution for "slower" progress. Slower in the sense that it raises everybody up across 40 characters instead of faster on 3.

I like the champ rewards on both 4*'s and 5*'s. 20% increase is nothing to sneeze at in my mind.

VIP every month for about 3 years, and the occasional HP deal or bundle here and there. I'd say maybe $500-$600 total in nearly 4 years of playing. But I've also been playing PvE competitively for 3 years, PvP for 2.

There's nothing wrong with pulling from Classics; that's what they're there for. I've done it from time to time myself. I just find it's helpful to hoard CP until one of my undercovered 5*s are featured in a store and then pull while the risk of getting something I want to avoid is minimized. That's the nice thing about the game, we do have choices about where and how we want to use our resources.

Though if they upped to odds in Classics to, say, 20 percent, that might become more enticing.

Yeah your progress looked pretty fast compared to me. I dont play competitive at all. I do hit story a bit harder during new releases to make sure I get a cover. But I always play the highest scl available to me. I'm interested to see how I fare in 10 when it goes live.
