Civil War Essential Missions erroneously locked

Hi, first time poster, I submitted a question through the game app, but my alliance is noticing that we're locked out of essential mission nodes even though we have the character.  I'm still new-ish, do you have to pick between Team Cap or Team Iron Man?  I.e. if there's 6 essential missions per, do you only have the option of doing those 6 between Team Cap OR Team Iron Man?  Or is this a bug?  I'm not going to hit full completion despite having all the characters (except Mr Fantastic), which is annoying given my 9 pulls from the legendary BRB store and 8 4* and 1 Hela.

    The side nodes are linked across the two Teams.  In a similar way to how the boss node for one side locks the boss node on the other side, each side node will lock out a side node for the other team, while unlocking both Boss nodes.
