How do ties work for strongest color?

If two characters have the same match damage on different colors that tie for max, which wins?  Is it based on character placement?

    Yes placement. At character select center is first then left then right.

    Determination of the opponent's 'strongest color' still makes no sense to me though in case of ties. I seem to recall facing the same team multiple times in PVE nodes where sometimes their strongest color was listed as X and other times as Y.
