Question about 4 or 5 matches

Wondered for a long time but never asked. When you make a 4 (or 5) gem match, how is the damage of the other gems determined?

For example, I make a 4-tile green match with Patch, do the other 4 tiles that get destroyed according to Patch's color levels? Or whoever is the highest for each tile?

    Its the strength of the char that made the initial match.
