Red Eye - 4* Cyclops not the essential?

i recently fought one team under someone where his team's front man was Doom, in the Red Eye pvp. His doom managed to do telegraphic strike and the purple power on me.

Had some other mates on the same Line chat having similar instances where 4* cyclops was not the essentail character in the Red Eye pvp. Is this a bug or intended?

    I've also seen it the other way around, having it let me use Cyclops in the Lightning Round instead of the LR essential.

    just experienced this, came here to report.
    From my testing, it's not needed to win the lightining round, just go to the boost selection screen, and go back..
