Has the game gotten you back into the comics?

I'm almost done with prologue part of story (I hate when you beat Ragnarok and only get 20 ISO instead of the reward) and it got me really curious about the story line behind it. I went and read some of the older trade paperbacks like Siege and they are pretty good.

The introduction of 4* Thor definitely contributed to me picking up that series. I had already heard a lot of the brouhaha about a female Thor anyway, and from the beginning I had assume it would just end up being a Marvel version of "Death & Return of Superman" - that is, male Thor would disappear, female Thor takes his place, this sells a bunch of comics, and then after 9-12 months Thor turns back up again and everything goes back to normal.

Well, turns out it is a "Death & Return" storyline, except that Jason Aaron is a pretty good writer (another reason I wanted to check it out) and he basically makes it very clear very early on that it's not the end of male Thor's story at all. Infact, so far the stories have been more about male Thor than female Thor (and male Thor is probably even more of a badass now). I actually feel as though female Thor's story so far has been a bit wishy-washy, but if other people find it empowering, then good for them.

Anyway, I'm liking it; I enjoy the way Aaron writes and Dauterman's art is really nice. Male Thor makes his big return in issue #4, so I'd say read those first 4 issues and if you're not hooked, then it's probably not for you.

I haven't read the Thoress stuff but Jason Aaron is one of my fave writers working at the moment.

If you like dark adult stuff, I highly recommend Scalped and Southern Bastards.

Based on all the new character speculation I just ordered the first
    Ms. Marvel
collection from Amazon and I can't wait! I've been intrigued by the character for a while now, but MPQ hype finally pushed me over the edge. I'm hoping its something I can share with my oldest son; I think he would love it!

I like the current Thor, but a lot of that is Dauterman's art. He reminds me of Moebious at points.

Ms. Marvel's first arc was really good, especially the art. Alphonso(if that's his name, I forget) was very good when he drew Runaways, but he's evolved into something really interesting, especially with the quality of colouring. The stories make me think of the old original Spider-Mans, the awkward lone kid who gets powers.

I love All New X-Men and Uncanny X-Men, so I was happy to see that Cyclops get used. Bachelo has done some career best work there.

But the game didn't get me to buy them, I just like comics.

It would have been cool to bring in the Superior Spider-Man as a 4*... That was a good series.
  • yes indeed. i went for marvel unlimited and never regret it.
i have been reading a lot of marvel comics now starting from dark reign and siege. and then i went back to secret invasion to get to understand all the stuffs in dark reign. and keep tracing back and back... more and more...
by far the most enjoyable stories i like is the Annihilation, Annihilation Conquest, and Thanos (03-04). For characters, I really like Nova and Thanos and i hope the game will make them soon.
  • I had been wanting to get into Marvel for a long time, i never read them as a kid and always wished I had. I had meant to follow a reading list I found online for a long time but never did. However playing MPQ really got me curious how we got to the Dark Avengers so I started reading like crazy and i'm loving it.

Yep - it pushed me to get a subscription to marvel unlimited, which I've really enjoyed despite its flaws (much like this game).

It made me read Squirrel Girl.

    I wish I was kidding...
  • I've got Marvel Unlimited, and I read a few issues of Dark Avengers, since I was unfamiliar with a few of the storyline characters in the game. I got bored with it pretty quickly, though. I pretty much hate what they've done with Norman Osbourne since they brought him back, which was a move I kind of hated as it was.

Definitely. I got Marvel Unlimited when I bought myself a Kindle Fire, and it's fantastic going back through all the various storylines over the years. Like X-Men #1. Hey! Xavier's kind of a jerk! Beast is a normal guy! Angel is... still there!

I was sort of already headed back in that direction before the game, though, because of Hawkeye. I had actually read some of Sex Criminals, Matt Fraction's comic for Image (that's really interesting) with Chip Zdarsky. (It's good. A bit adult, of course...) Didn't realize that it was the same guy who was writing the Hawkeye comics until saw the cover used for 2* Hawkeye in the game and started poking around google looking for other David Aja artwork.

I never was into comics as a kid (parents thought it was a waste of money), but playing MPQ has sparked my interest in comics and now I regularly buy TPBs on Comixology.
  • Well, I subscribed to Scribd just a month ago since they have comics section nowadays. I read and re-read lots of Wolverine, Deadpool, Uncanny X-Men, Rocket & Groot and other Marvel comics there. Now every time I think MPQ is unsatisfying I just flip my iPad to Scribd and look up some Marvel comics.

Never read comics before this game. I now subscribe to Marvel Unlimited. Have read the Civil War, Secret Invasion and now half way through the Dark Reign story arcs.
  • I started reading the big events... but between events I started missing things and finally broke down and now am just reading most of the comics released (since it's via Unlimited, i'm reading 5 year old stuff, but it's still worth it)
  • Thinking about it. When I was reading hardcore, 2099 was out ( I know showing my age). I was at a store and saw Spider-Man 2099. If that's out, I might be reading again.

    Thanks,

    James

There is one out now, by Peter David. I've read the first three issues on Marvel Unlimited. It's got him in the present day.

Also subscribed to Marvel Unlimited because I was curious about story lines mentioned in this game.

And it gets you so much more for $10 a month than buying 2000 HP.
