Best Builds vs Best Teams

So this is academic for me at this point, as a longtime yet F2P player I'm still getting my three stars together and rarely need to make a decision which colors to max as I'm mostly still shy of 13 covers on most 3*s. I was wondering though, having read all the great analysis on character builds, does everyone (who can't afford multiples of the same character at least) build to the best individual character build, or do people build towards best teams? For instance, green seems to be a lot of characters' best color, but how many characters do you want everyone in this group with their green maxed, or, if you've got 2 or 3 great green characters and would you put only three covers into green into your 4th best character who's normally a 5 green build but has two good other powers so that he works better in the three man team?
I hope that makes sense. I'd be interested in hearing what you all do in these situations. I'm getting there, although, having been winning more covers in events lately, I've having the covers also means needing more ISO (I need about 450,000 for my 3*s) but that's another issue.

The problem is that most of the best builds are such because there is one skill that is clearly not up to par. Since you used green as an example, Those amazing skills like LT and punisher you want to max because it's clearly the characters best skill, period. Whereas ones like She-hulk? Green is terrible, so if it werent' for the character level cap there might be debate for not using any covers in the first place, to keep the AI from using it.
There are only a handful of ones where the team comp would trump the theoretical best single build. Notably: For general use, 5/5/3 is recomended for Hood, but 3/5/5 is necessary if you want to use it to prevent cascades with Sentry, or plan to run IM40'/LC, where you'd have more than 3 countdowns out at a time. Patch's green's insane synergy with cmags makes the huge risk for his green fairly unimportant. And, there's still a lot of debate over fury, given how most of his numbers are not properly documented, but there are arguments both ways re: maxing yellow or purple, both of which are fairly rare colors. Debates between 1 or 2 Y covers for IM40 (or more, if you NEVER want to use it), depending on how often you have a blue user. Oh and I guess some people don't plan to use ever strike tiles, so they go 5/5/3 with OBW, though IMO you'd never want to go above 3 purple anyway0 -
I do both.
Where there's clearly a only one sensible build - either Cap Murica for example - that's what I tend to go with. Where you've got options, I tune them to work together better or at least work with whatever I've already got.0 -
I am also free to play and have gone through the same thing. I take covers as they come and then when I get them cover maxed and I get new covers I switch to optimal builds. There are a few exceptions like IM40 who I passed on his 3rd yellow until it was his 13th cover. The only reason I even took that was because I didn't want to leave him short and that might have still been a mistake. I don't turn down covers because as you get people up to 166 you start fighting bigger teams. If you have under leveled covers they are now more difficult to play since they are weaker and have less health. My A team has a 5,5,2 Sentry when 3,5,5 would be ideal. If I didn't take the 5 red I would be at 3,5,2 and his World Rupture would not be nearly as strong.
Hope this helps0 -
Generally, every good-to-great character has one standout power (LT green, Sentry green, Torch red, BP black, UDaken purple, Hood blue, etc.), which you'll max out no matter what. Many characters have one **** power (LT red, BP blue, etc.) that you'll want to ignore no matter what. Their optimal builds will simply not change, because the downside is too great. However, those with one standout power and two good-to-great powers (Sentry, Torch, UDaken, Hood, etc.) have a bit of wiggle room.
I usually spec heavy hitters towards optimizing solo performance, but I'll take synergy into account for support or semi-support characters (e.g. UDaken).0 -
Patch is a good example of this. I have his green at 5 because I use him with CMags a lot, so I'm not worried about the enemy strike tiles. It also makes him more volatile as a defender. Most who use him as a more stand alone hero don't dare put 5 in green.0
