A long time ago, Gambit used to be hands down the best character in the game. Then they nerfed him into oblivion....
Then they buffed him, and he's actually not bad now. I think alot of people just have had this idea that he's terrible for so long and never actually use him when he's buffed. FA cap and banner hulk suffer from the same stigma.
His numbers are high and at 672 he hits really hard. He's not bad but I'm not sure if he's good right now. The problem is that he's not fast enough in the free AP supports metagame. He was decent when things were a little slower.

A problem I discovered with 5* Gambit is that his Red does not work as described. It needs at least 1 charged tile on the board to be able to be fired, but the description does not mention that.

Despite his terrible lockout, he is my all time favourite Marvel character, so I love to use him where I can (he was nearly even the DP for this account).
While boosted, he performs well with lesser or support characters. Ascended Iron May bumps his stats nicely alongside anyone who fortifies his CDs or can burst heal him. I've also paired him with Viper for giggles.

It seems to me an issue that his red sets charged tiles to 3. It means he doesn't really play nice with teams that want charged tiles or with teams that want to remove charged tiles. (Yes, I know this is similar to MThor's Yellow and it hasn't been a problem for her.) Could work ok with Storm5?
I haven't put much ISO into my 2/2/3 Gambit. Had some success pairing him with Red Skull and Nico/Kitty/Hobgoblin against the goons. It helps that Red Skull pretty much completely neutralises the goons on his own. Lends himself a little to CD and repeater tile teams.
Figure there's characters that can use the purple and red without having to fire a purple or red themselves though. Multiple Man, Silver Sable or Emma5 maybe?

I have the most success just playing him straight -- cast his red and purple when you have enough AP for them, and just let him own those colors. Both abilities hit pretty hard when he's boosted.
He's really not suited to combo shenanigans, unfortunately. You could bring a teammate who likes the stuff he does. Toni Ho can do some damage off his repeater. Coulson/Hawkeye/Kang like the countdown tiles. Otherwise I'd just bring someone who does stuff with the other 4 colors.

With Juggs boosted I just ran him and 4a5 R4G and left Gambit to use his red and purple as he could.
The black lock out does seem pointless now considering how many other AP spammers and Supports we have. At the very least they could treat it a bit like 5* Riri's lock out so it is tied to a countdown that could be matched.

To be fair it was goons again on day 3 of him as an essential so taking Red Skull made it impossible to lose on 2 of the 3 days. I've done the clears now so it's academic until next time he's essential, which might not be for a few years, possibly never again at this rate.
I kind of like the drawback on his power though. It does force some slightly different team building, at least when your team levels can't just clear the node with any combination. I'd be OK with them slapping this drawback on a few other characters.
I've also just thought of putting Clea on the team. Keep forgetting she exists but her yellow drains red slower than Gambit generates it.

The downside made a LOT more sense years ago, before we had so many hyperefficient AP generators and free powers. I also wouldn't mind them continuing to use stuff like this, but it has to make sense!
Powers that have downsides should always be stronger than ones that don't -- you use the downside as sort of a rebate to make something stronger than you would otherwise.
