So did PVP MMR just explode?

My closest to 1a5 characters are Juggernaut and Storm; I have a 370 Hawkeye and widow but the dupes are nowhere close to 4* for the merge up. I haven’t yet landed on a team that will let me grind wins without slamming down health packs.

Only thing I am wondering now is if I drop to 9 or 8 will I still see 550sI am genuinely shocked after all this time that you don't understand how this game works! SCL in PvP = determines what rewards you can win.
In all fairness, absolutely nothing in game explains this. The only way to know is to have some one explain it to you.
In pve scl changes the difficulty of the enemy team, it's natural to assume pvp would work the same, especially when nothing tells you that it doesn't.
Yeah but Turbo has been playing longer than I have!

Yes but I foolishly applied logic to it, that if I go for lower rewards there should be less top level players as I’d expect level 550 players to be playing for the top rewards

This is actually true though (sort of).
If your goal is placement rewards, it can make sense to drop down to a lower CL. In the past you'd see bigger rosters slumming it in cl8 or 9 for new character rewards, because placement is easier there.
The thing the game doesn't tell you is that your PvP bracket and matchmaking pool are not the same thing. You can be matched up with anyone, from any CL or any bracket.

Bring back the wonky MMR... Right now it's 550 everywhere, even thought my 1>5* has 1 x 550 and the rest of 1* almost there. Actual 5* is far from 550... Not really competitive for me...

And, like, more importantly, if you have all the 1* at 550, you ARE a 550 player, in the same way I am with 100+ 550s!
All the 1* are really good now (Hawkeye used to be kinda iffy, and Iron Man isn't the best), and they're all boosted all the time. There really should be nothing you can't beat once you reach that level.

I know. That's why I want that wonky MMR back. It was so refreshing...

I think the question now is how close is very close? My highest characters are 527, 525, 507, 506, 505. Let's run with the old theory it is an average of your top characters that gives me MMR of circa 514. In Red Skull PvP I got hit by a 672 1a5 Hawkeye and 672 2a5 Cap (yup somebody has him!), so that is dual 550MMR who just also happen to be boosted. I'm on 689 points, so I haven't exactly broken the event MMR either. So does this mean:
a.) MMR starts to go 550 above level 500?
b.) The game has lost players so MMR has to stretch wider (if the game has lost players I am not seeing it in terms of improved ranking). If anything, because of ascension I think the game has MORE players with high level 1a5 than natural 550 5* so the pool should be fuller.
c.) MMR is still broken? If more players now have permanent boosted 1a5 (and 2a5!) every single week but MMR is counting non 550 players to hit then the advantage is bigger than ever with a wider pool of players for true 550 players to hit. This advantage has been largely (but not completely) bestowed on players by the Devs allowing the broken rain down of covers for winning 5 second matches and it may end up completely unbalancing PvP.
It would be nice to think the Devs have one eye on this. If MMR is working as intended you may risk stranding a portion of players in a twilight zone where they are vulnerable to being picked off by 550 players with no hope of fighting back, especially if the meta get nerfed. MMR might require tweaking to take into account the now wider pool of 550 players who should be able to fight each other. If MMR is NOT working as intended then it needs fixing.

My top 3 characters are 498, 495,495, and I’m just getting served up 550s now too. I became part of the Juggernaut/Sam rabble though, and I can at least grind wins reasonably now.

So it appears the algorithm is off a bit compared to where it was. I added maybe 2 Shang covers and 1 Jane cover since before MMR broke with Unity so it seems unlikely I have tumbled over some sort of hidden precipice. MMR is still broken but now in favour of 550 rosters. PvP is still playable for me but it would be nice to have this fixed or confirmed that changes have been made.

You also have to take into account that the game can only show you players that are unshielded, so if you join in the last day of the event and everyone the game would consider to be at your level of play is already shielded for the event or at low points, the game has to open up MMR and show you players worth points that are either much higher or much lower than you.
I just climbed over 1000 points in Red Skull and there is only one 550 player around to show me. Every other player it shows me are much lower rosters for like 5 points.

True but I joined day one. I am getting a mixture of players but the amount of 550 has definitely ticked up. That could be my rosters fault of course but I don't think so.

It's possible that there are no longer any ~lvl514 players to show you that are unshielded and worth > 30 points or so. Many players previously in that situation have just spent a few months levelling all their ascended guys up to 550.
If that's the case, matchmaking will widen its scope and look for good fights outside your range, "good" meaning "worth points."

We see this sometimes with players who've gotten themselves into similarly odd situations roster-wise. Because each tier has maximums and minimums, players will tend to congregate around the edges. So there are probably a lot of 450 players and a lot of 550 players, but there are no longer many 500-520 players, because they're 550 players now.
It's like when a player meticulously sets their top 3 characters at like 360 or 475 or something (not saying you are doing this) and complains that they're not seeing peers -- matchmaking would like to show you a player who's only got 360s or 475s, but if it can't find them it has to give you something.

My other matches say otherwise. No. The 550s are the outlier not the 514s. Besides if I am so rare, how are the 550s finding me?!?!? Unshielded could be part of the answer but then again I got hit after 4 fights earlier in the event...

Maybe but nothing has really changed with my roster since before Unity, yet all of a sudden since MMR was "fixed" everything has changed in who is attacking me.

Wait, so you're still seeing what you saw before but now you're seeing more 550s? It's probably because there are a lot more 550 players now?
We've always been able to find you. Matchmaking is about who you see, not who sees you. It's a subtle but important distinction. Under the right conditions you'd always have been visible to us.

No, I didn't see many double 550s before. Eh, it is what it is, guess welcome to the new normal.
Edit: Also I take on board what you say about always being able to find us but for normally pathetic points and not on my climb. Oh well.

I agree, I used to see a few 550 but only after 20 + fights in Simulator
Now I was seeing them from fight 1, my rota hasn’t changed much in the past 6 months as I was trying to keep my characters under 500 for the very reason my roster didn’t feel ready for max 550
If this is the new normal then I may as well favourite those least likely to be nerfed and join the 550 ranks
