Gideon's Triumph takes effect every turn if Exiled [Investigating]

I used Crush Contraband to exile my opponent's Gideon's Triumph. However, despite being exiled, it still took effect and killed my first creature when my first creature attacked. I was playing Ajani, Adversary of Tyrants and had the support from his 3rd ability out so I was getting new cat tokens* every turn, but every single turn for the rest of the game Gideon's Triumph would take effect and kill my first creature**.
Obviously, that doesn't seem to be working as intended; a support that's exiled should no longer affect the game and it certainly shouldn't allow a one-use support like Gideon's Triumph to last forever.
This may be a related issue to this bug report, as well.
*well to be completely accurate, I was getting not cat tokens but reinforcements of Leonin Vanguard.
**technically it'd be more accurate to say Gideon's Triumph would attempt to kill my first creature. What would actually happen is my stack of Leonin Vanguards would attack, deal no damage and have its toughness reduced to zero (from the nonexistent Triumph triggering), but before the Vanguard went to the graveyard, my second creature, Leonin Warleader, would attack, creating one new reinforcement for Vanguard, thus putting the Vanguard's toughness up to 1; at the end of the attack step, the Vanguard would survive with 1 toughness. Next turn, the same process would happen again. I don't believe Gideon's Triumph's behavior is related to this though, because I had already exiled Gideon's Triumph before this happened the first time. If Gideon's Triumph is intended to not send creatures to the graveyard until after the entire attack step is done, I believe this is correct, it's just an unintuitive way of coding the card. Especially since similar cards (e.g. Farm) don't function that way as far as I know.

Do you recall where in the game you encountered this issue? Was this an event or story mission?
Do you recall which Planeswalker your opponent was using at the time, or if there were any other supports in play when you encountered this issue?0 -
This was in an event - standard Training Grounds. Opponent was using Elspeth. I may have had some other supports in play, but my opponent did not.
