Savage Stomp not working properly? [Investigating]

Savage Stomp reads that your first creature will get +1/+1 and then your first creature and your opponent's first creature deal their power in damage to each other. I have noticed that the +1/+1 is only applying if your first creature survives the Stomp. Just recently, I had my 8/8 go up against my opponent's 8/8 and both died. Shouldn't my creature have become a 9/9 before the fight?
